UK: Archbishop delivers on promise to make a "headship evangelical" bishop

    Church of England Newspaper
    October 2, 2015

The new Bishops of Maidstone, (Rod Thomas), Kensington (Graham Tomlin) and Edmonton (Robert Wickham) were consecrated in a packed Canterbury Cathedral on Wednesday 23rd September. Supporters of all three gathered to congratulate them in bright sunshine outside the west door, including a coach party that had come up from Bishop Thomas' s church in Plymouth.

The service included "To God be the Glory", "In Christ Alone" (with the proper words), "How deep the Father's love for us", "There is a Redeemer" and "Guide O thou Great Redeemer."

Dr Paul Weston from Ridley Hall preached on the readings for St Matthew's Day. He spoke humorously of his experience at a Speed Awareness Course (on which he had been trying to enrol for years). He noted that for many on such a course sin was to be 'caught out'. The apostle's words that "God has shone in our hearts" shows that the real question is whether our life matches that of Jesus Christ. "Jesus came not to call the righteous, but the serious", he said.

The new bishops were greeted with long and loud applause in the packed cathedral whose acoustics made the hymns and responses sound like a drumroll.

Praise God, England now has Rod Thomas, the 4 "flying bishops" (2 in Canterbury, 1 in York, 1 in London), and a number of other staunch faithful bishops.

From total defeat less than a year ago to a great sense of hope. God is so very good, even when we are faithless.

These are bishops who do not have jurisdiction over a proper diocese, but rather they "fly" between different communities who require special services. In the context of the Church of England, a flying bishop moves between conservative parishes who cannot accept the ministry of women. He provides sacraments and celebrations for those parishes, which would otherwise be deprived.
