The colony of Roanoke is a famous mystery, as it's known as the "Lost Colony". It is also the first Anglican community in the New World. However, Lee Miller theorizes in her book "Roanoke" that the colonists were part of a movement in England called the Separatists. She writes: https://books.google.com/books?id=A...HdvPAuoQ6AEIKjAC#v=onepage&q=anglican&f=false Scholars still debate what the full story is about the colony's disaster. This article says that scholars may have found where some of the colonists went: What happened was that investigators took a closer look at an old map in an English archive in the UK and found what appeared to be a covered-up symbol for a fort in another part of Virginia/NC, and then they detected cannons and coffins there with radar. But why would someone in the UK have covered up the symbol for the second fort so that it could not be found? Above is the map with highlighting showing the patch up. One debate has been whether the Powhatan massacred the Roanoke colony because there was a report from Jamestown that they had. But scholars are often skeptical about this, as the Powhatan land was far to the north of Roanoke. One idea that occurs to me is that what the Powhatan actually had in mind was their massacre of the Spanish mission near Jamestown in 1570. See here for mention of that incident: http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/pdf/10.1080/00437956.1982.11435719
The first mystery is whether the English government or a faction in it intentionally sabotaged the colony and doomed it. Le Miller's theory focuses on the role of Walsingham: http://pages.jh.edu/~jhumag/1101web/roanoke.html See also: Reader's Digest the Truth about History By Reader's Digest
