Four Shot, One Killed in Copenhagen During Debate on Whether Islam Inspires Violence

    by Aurelius • February 14, 2015

Thirty shots were fired in Copenhagen during a debate about Freedom of Speech, Islam, and whether it inspires violence.

One civilian died in the shooting, while three policemen were injured, but none fatally. The talk, held at a cafe more known for jazz, was titled, “Art, blasphemy and the freedom of expression.”

The debate was organized by Lars Vilks, who drew a caricature of Muhammad in 2007. Police are looking for two gunmen, who escaped the cafe after opening fire.

The French ambassador to Denmark was in attendance at the time of the shooting, but was uninjured. France has released a statement calling the incident a “terrorist attack.”

After the shooting, the debate resumed. Writer Helle Merete Brix told reporters, “People actually reacted very calmly, and the meeting continued. We could not get away, so we continued our discussion.”
