I currently have been using the 1979 BCP from TEC. It has served me well, but I've wanted to expand my resources for prayer. I've seen so many other Anglican prayer books available including St. Augustine's prayerbook and the COE Common Worship which a priest at my church uses. Does anyone have a particular BCP or other Anglican prayer book they can suggest? I currently attend an ACNA church, but I don't believe they have finished their prayer book compilation.
Hello Ide. I like The Shorter Prayer Book. Here are a couple of links: http://justus.anglican.org/resources/bcp/Shorter/shorter.htm https://www.amazon.com/Shorter-Prayer-Green-Hardcover-CP211/dp/0521502829
At the recent clericus, our Abp. commended to us the Scottish Prayer Book of 1929. He also selected a number of offices from it for corporate prayer during the course of the meetings. So, at his behest, I have been looking into it further: http://justus.anglican.org/resources/bcp/Scotland/BCP1929.pdf
Of course I will want to celebrate the 1662 Book of Common Prayer... the locus of Anglican identity and unity for the last four centuries... Where every one of the later Prayer Books goes back to as the source, the hallowed ground of our tradition
I have the 1662, the 1979, and the 1928. The ACNA does allow (recommend?) the 1928 among several choices, and that's the one I have enjoyed the most. I ordered the 1662 and the 1928 from Oxford University Press. https://global.oup.com/academic/pro...bybinding_facet=Leather Binding&lang=en&cc=us
Great recommendations! I will have to look through them a bit. I have also the Daily Office Rite II for Morning and Evening prayer on my Kindle. It is nice because I don't have to go looking for the readings- everything is right there. I use it when I travel to have one less thing to carry: https://www.amazon.com/Office-Morni...08468662&sr=8-1&keywords=daily+office+rite+ii It's based on the 1979 TEC BCP and is a nice resource for its ease of use. But, there is something to be said for the sense of holding a real book when praying.. it's a nice feeling of connection that I miss with the digital versions. Soon we will all just have e-readers in the pews....
We use the 2003 REC BCP, which as mentioned is basically a 1928 and a 1662 BCP. Really can't get any better than this today, the best there is in traditional Anglicanism of today. At home I use the pure 1662 BCP.
A great version has been published by Lancelot Andrewes Press and I'd recommend it to anyone. Its low cost, but the quality is wonderful.
I love real books, holding them, turning the pages. A total bibliophile who even loves the smell of a new book, is this wrong?
I am the same way. I simply want the challenge of having to put the Office together myself... but I do have an app for when I'm not feeling it. But then, I can't do it in the 1662!
You can't beat the 1662. https://www.churchofengland.org/prayer-worship/worship/book-of-common-prayer.aspx Daily Office with the correct readings can be found here (just select "traditional") https://www.churchofengland.org/prayer-worship/join-us-in-daily-prayer.aspx But if you like it, I would encourage to to invest in a physical book, a book is just better for prayer than a screen IMHO.
