News article here. May God's grace rest upon her and her country. Though she was not my monarch, I have always felt that she did justice to both her ancestors and her throne. I am sorry to see her pass, but I believe that she is now with the Lord Jesus Christ.
I’m a little bit gob-smacked myself. I’ve never known another British monarch. I thought she may have been immortal. I pray for King Charles III. He is faced with an immense challenge.

I have never known a time without her as she became monarch on Feb 1952 and I was born later that year. My whole life, she has existed. This is almost like the death of a close relative and feels like the end of history is so many ways. Wow, just wow. I hope she is at peace now. She deserves the rest. Whatever one's view of monarchy in general, she was a good and faithful servant.
Being as she was by all accounts a woman of colossal faith, and her knack for bouncing back from health scares before, I'd wondered if she was meant to rule till the Second Coming.
We are the United Kingdom, not Great Britain. Indeed, we are in shock. The majority of us have known no other sovereign. There she was on Tuesday appointing a new prime minister and 48 hours later she's dead. We're very shocked and it feels quite surreal.
Is there a material difference? I always thought they were used interchangeably the way we use America and the United States. Apparently from @PDL's response, that is incorrect.
A lot of people refer to the UK as England. I noticed that a lot when I lived in France (l'Angleterre). Of course, England is only one of the four nations that make up the UK. I think if I were Northern Irish, Scottish or Welsh I'd be ofended to hear the UK referred to as England. Great Britain is not the entire UK. The country's full, formal name is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Great Britain refers to England, Scotland and Wales. The full name can be contracted to the United Kingdom or to the abbreviation UK. An alternative name to use is Britain but not Great Britain. The UK does not include the Isle of Mann or the Channel Islands. To refer to the UK and those other entities it is correct to say the British Islands. The geographical entity, which excludes the Channel Islands, but does include the entire island of Ireland is called the British Isles. I know the Irish don't like that geographical name. I confess, however, to not knowing how they prefer this archipelago to be named.
Why not 'Great' Britain? We have used this for centuries to differentiate between Brittany in France; it is used in the Olympics and so on.
I had a Scottish aunt some years back. She was in favor of the independence referendum up there. She just finally got US citizenship 3 or 4 years ago.
The Kingdom of Great Britain is the country we Yankees won our independence from. The United Kingdom is the one we fought in 1812. I think it’s common for us to still think of it by the old name, since that’s what we learn about in our history classes in grade school when we study the Revolution.
I think that's a holdover of your olympic code being 'GBR'. I'm not British, but I imagine plenty of Northern Irish feel peeved about their athletes competing under "Team GB" branding.
