Does the Church of England need evangelicals?

My first impression was that the intended subject of this thread would be the pros and cons of established churches (an interesting and worthwhile topic). I’m not going to participate in a culture war debate.

The situation in the CofE has been precipitated by what you call the "culture war debate". The entire Christian world is now embroiled in the "culture war debate". The outcome of this debate will determine the course of Christianity in the years and decades to come. It will touch every corner of the world. There is no ignoring it (for long, anyway). Western Christian churches have tried to ignore this for four decades now, with the resulting disasterous mess you see everywhere.

There's no hiding from what's happening. Like it or not, we're all engaged in what is likely to be a movement as momentous as the 16th century Protestant Reformation or the 10th century Great Schism between East and West. The current CofE battle is simply a part of a much larger war that is currently raging.

Touching on the CofE: I am surprised somewhat by how supine the CofE leadership has truly been over the course of the last century. Being an "established" Church doesn't mean that the Archbishop has no power -- remember St. Ambrose's rebuke of Emperor Theodosius. But exercising this kind of power requires a Bishop to have a spine, something notably lacking in the recent specimens from Canterbury and York.

No, and neither is homosexual, because the writers of the NT wrote in Greek. However both gay and lesbian activities are clearly identified and condemned.

This is anachronistic, as there was no such thing in the ancient world. It was idolatrous activities that were “clearly identified and condemned.”

Male and female homosexual activity was definitely a thing in the ancient world.

Idolaters were identified and condemned, along with fornicators, adulterers, male prostitutes, sodomites, thieves, the greedy, drunkards, revilers, and robbers.
    Or,
Romans 1:26 For this reason God gave them up to degrading passions. Their women exchanged natural intercourse for unnatural, 27 and in the same way also the men, giving up natural intercourse with women, were consumed with passion for one another. Men committed shameless acts with men and received in their own persons the due penalty for their error.
    Nothing there about idolatory.

It's likely that Jesus and at least some of the twelve Apostles spoke Aramaic but there is no credible evidence that any of the gospels were originally written in Aramaic. It's likely that much of Jesus's ministry would have been conducted in Koine Greek so that he could speak to gentiles, including Romans, Greeks, and Syro-Phonecians.
On a recent trip a priest talked about the Aramaic Lord's Prayer. When I questioned him he admitted there was no original Aramaic text; rather it was translated from Greek to Aramiaic, and then the full linguistic scope of the Aramaic words were explored.

That’s not what you said, and that’s not what I disputed. At least try to argue this in good faith.

Lev 18:22 Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.
Lev 18:23 Neither shalt thou lie with any beast to defile thyself therewith: neither shall any woman stand before a beast to lie down thereto: it is confusion....
Lev 18:29 For whosoever shall commit any of these abominations, even the souls that commit them shall be cut off from among their people.

Lev 20:13 If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.

Sounds to me like homosexual activity was clearly identified in these passages, and clearly condemned. (And from an early age, my reading comprehension skills have always been above average. :) )

We were discussing the NT. It seems you forgot which part of the Bible Leviticus is in.

    Yes, indeed.

The announcement of the new Church of England City deanery chapter was made on the website of St Helen's Bishopsgate, one of the largest evangelical Anglican churches in London.

In a statement on its website, the church said, "After the House of Bishops' recent departure from the Bible's teaching on marriage and sexuality, new leadership structures are needed."

Thank God there are still Christians in England who understand that sexual sin is still sexual sin, it didn't cease being sin at the first Advent. The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob is still on His throne today, and the moral standards He set forth cannot be modified by 'new scholarship' or human reasoning. It takes a brave Christian to stand against the modern neo-morality in the face of a highly critical and hypocritical society (which is fond of accusing staunch, faithful Christians of judgmentalism at the same time that they themselves judge and condemn the Christians).

Any church that approves of the Capitalist or Religiously Bigoted lifestyles should have Ichabod written on their doorpost.

Don't try to tell me there is nobody in your church that loves money and approves of accumulating it.

Why should there not also be those of a homsexual 'lifestyle' seeking the mercy and sanctification of Jesus Christ in the pew next to yours? Isn't that what we should all be doing and encouraging others to do alongside us?

If actual success over sinfulness is required for membership of the church, how successful are the Capitalists and Religious Bigots in your church in their struggle with their sin?
