Hello friends I had a question concerning guardian angels, are they real? Do you believe in them? I looked at a couple verses in scripture a while back as a Roman Catholic that seemed to support the BASE of the doctrine (not the entire doctrine itself). Just recently, I was looking to see if any Church fathers taught that guardian angels exist, and found a couple did! If you feel sweetness or compunction at some word of your prayer, dwell on it; for then our guardian angel is praying with us. St. John Climacus In the presence of an invisible spirit, the body becomes afraid; but in the presence of an angel, the soul of the humble is filled with joy. Therefore, when we recognize the presence from the effect, let us quickly hasten to prayer, for our good guardian has come to pray with us. St. John Climacus "When you close the doors to your dwelling and are alone you should know that there is present with you the angel whom God has appointed for each man…This angel, who is sleepless and cannot be deceived, is always present with you; he sees all things and is not hindered by darkness. You should know, too, that with him is God, who is in every place; for there is no place and nothing material in which God is not, since He is greater than all things and holds all men in His hand." St. Antony the Great What are your opinions on this matter?
I absolutely do believe in guardian angels. Always have, always will. The Church has always taught about the wonders of angels.
“See that you do not despise one of these little ones; for I tell you that in heaven their angels always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven."
Wow. Thanks for pointing out the verse. I have read Matthew, but did not register this verse in relationship to angels.
So you don't believe in lucifer, the most beautiful and powerful of all angels prior to his rebellion?
I did not say I do not believe in angels, but in guardian angels in particular. We can know of certain angels from scripture, including lucifer.
But when Christ was being tempted by Satan didn't He say that His father could send legions of angels to protect Him if He so desired?
Of course, the whole of the heavenly host would come to assist Christ at his commandment. But individuals are not assigned their own personal guardian angel. Where is that in the Bible?
Obviously, a Catholic could ask you to point to the divinely inspired table of contents telling us which books make up the Bible, not to mention the verse in Scripture saying every teaching must be in the Bible. Personally, I'll just refer you back to post #4.
Even then, Psalm 91:11 saith: This is the Douay Rheims Challoner Revision version, but all other translations report the same. I even heard a Salvation Army officer use this verse in a sermon on guardian angels.
I have had two guardian angels. Wore the first one out as a teenager and as a Marine. The second one asked for help and God sent my wife. There is biblical teaching on guardian angels. They do not take the place of the Holy Spirit. As an earthly father is used by our Heavenly Father, a guardian angel is used by the Holy Spirit. Fr. Mark
1. How is an earthly father used by our Heavenly Father? 2. How is a guardian angel used by the Holy Spirit?
Psalm 91 refers to Christ. This is made clear by the passages on the temptation in the desert "If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence: For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee: And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone." (Luke 4) (Article VI)
If you are implying that Psalm 91 only refers to Christ then I disagree. Recall those close, unexplainable, shaves from danger/disaster in your life. Or have you forgotten them, or put them down as a coincidence.
